2024 was a good year for my photography. Lightroom tells me it was my second most prolific year of shooting since I picked the habit back up a few years ago. But more importantly, a lot more of those exposures turned into photographs I’m happy with — or at least came closer to the vision I had in mind when I shot them.

In other words – 2024 was the year things started to click. While learning never really ends, this was the year I felt like I’d actually learned something. I got better at spotting compositions, expanded my ideas of what a good composition could be, and sharpened my skills at turning a raw image into a finished photograph. Whatever setbacks the year brought, it was reassuring to see that practice always brings improvement. Whether in work, art, hobbies, or even relationships—if we spend enough time doing something with care and thought, we will get better at it.

With that in mind, I’m excited to see what this year will bring and how I’ll feel about my progress this time in 2026.

Here then, are some of my favorite photographs of the last year, in no particular order. Mostly, I just think they’re good photographs. Some made the list because they mean something to me — maybe the subject is important, or maybe it’s an idea I’ve struggled to capture before but finally nailed this time. The very best ones, of course, are the technically solid shots of things that matter.

This year’s winner

sunset over a marshy pond alt=
The Far Side of the Lake, August 2024

A shot of the small marsh behind my family’s cabin, one evening in late summer. Two cranes were circling the area and their ancient cries echoed between the hills and hung in the air. A primal sound that felt like history. I love this picture. I loved taking this picture. The colours, the textures, the visible rustle of the grass as it swayed in the warm breeze, I think this one’s just great. It’s currently hanging on a wall at home and I still often find myself stopping to take it in.

The rest of the images are grouped by theme and presented in no specific order. I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you have a happy 2025!

Getting lost in the woods

A footpath leading out from some trees and into a sunlit meadow
Hazy sunlight slipping in between tall trees
a footpath curving around a tree and leading into dark woods
A burst of orange leaves covering a tree with bare branches
a misty scene of a tree with a pond in the background
an old shack in a snow-covered copse

Returning to water

two small islands trailing into the fjord at sunset
small boats on the shore of a lake
a seaside rock surrounded by water
a cluster of boulders along a rock slope out to sea

Exploring new ideas

two silhouetted figures walking at night
a garage forecourt
a mid-century Norwegian wooden house at Christmas
a man waiting by a railway crossing
